Simply Family Home Evening; Come, Follow Me FHE Lessons: Feb 18-24 “Blessed Are Ye”

Onto week 8! Can you believe that we've been doing this for almost 2 whole months?! This week the lesson we'll be studying from Come, Follow Me is "Blessed Are Ye." We will be studying Matthew 5 and Luke 6. We get to discuss the beatitudes! We have a really fun matching game to help us (cause I know I don't have these memorized) and all our kids connect the promises attached to each quality. We're excited to hear your ideas on how you will approach this week and how Simply Family Home Evening is most useful in your families!

Our plan this week is to watch the Bible Videos that go with this block of scripture on Sunday the 17th in the afternoon. (Also - how AWESOME is our 2 hour block?! I still feel weird on the weeks that we go home after Sunday School. I find I stay and visit longer on those days because it's just not time to go home! Haha! But after Relief Society its so normal to visit for a couple minutes and get the kids out to the car.)

Anyway.... back to the Simply Family Home Evening lesson at hand... haha! Often in our family we use the Bible Videos and New Testament stories because they hold the little kids' attention well. Some of our children are very young and don't read yet. We try to make sure the kids understand on their level what happened in the video we watched. In order to make sure we are still teaching from the scriptures as well, we use the excerpts from the scriptures that are suggested in the primary manual.

If this is your first time here, make sure to check out THIS POST which will give you an overview of the layout for our lessons.

The lesson idea we decided to focus on for Family Home Evening this week is:
I Can Be a Peacemaker
Simply Family Home Evening; Come, Follow Me FHE Lessons: Feb 18-24 “Blessed Are Ye”
Preparation: If you have a Cricut we have pinned our files to our Pinterest account. Here are the links to the pins for the bees and beehives we've made. The words are already printed on them.
If you don't have a Cricut, no worries! It's still really easy to set this game up. Do a clip art image search for:
bees (print off 8)
beehives (print off 8)
Go through each beatitude in Matthew 5:1-10. Write the "blessed are the __" portion on the bees and the "for they shall __" portion on the beehives.
Clip art image search for doves (print off enough for each kid to have one or two)
Lesson:
Watch the videos, either New Testament Stories or Bible Videos; read the scripture references or use a mix of both.
New Testament Stories
Chapter 19: Sermon On The Mount
Bible Video
Sermon on the Mount: The Beatitudes
Scripture Reference
     Matthew 5:9

Play the "Bee-Atitudes" matching game. Match the bee to the correct hive. Use Matthew 5:1-10 to help you.
Simply Family Home Evening; Come, Follow Me FHE Lessons: Feb 18-24 “Blessed Are Ye”

You can play the game a few different ways:
Easy:
Have all the hives spread on the floor. Have one of the kids select a bee. Read what the bee says and what the hive says that they belong with and have the kids repeat it with you. Show the kids where the hive is and have them "fly" the bee to the hive.
Medium:
Spread out the hives face up and the bees face down. Have the kids flip over a bee, read the beatitude that it goes with and have them find the hive and "fly" the bee to the hive.
Hard:
Play memory with them. Flip them all over, face down. Have the kids take turns flipping over a bee and a hive trying to get a match.

Activity Ideas:
Use the peace doves, give the kids the following scenarios or others that fit your family and ask them how they can be peacemakers. Write their answers on the doves. When you are done you can hang them up in the house to remind everyone all week long about how we can all be peacemakers.

Two of your siblings are fighting over a toy
You see your brother/sister being mean to another one of your brothers/sisters
Mom is frustrated over the mess in the toy room or the dirty dishes
Your friend is playing with your special favorite toy
Someone says something mean about your friend
Someone breaks your new toy

Additional Lesson or Discussion Ideas:

Jesus wants me to be a light to others

Simply Family Home Evening; Come, Follow Me FHE Lessons: Feb 18-24 “Blessed Are Ye”

Preparation: Flashlight and a picture of the Savior hung up in the bathroom or another dark room.
Scriptures: Matthew 5:14-16
Lesson:
Scripture Reference
     Matthew 5:14-16
Take a flashlight into the room where you have the picture of the Savior. Keep the lights off and talk about how the world can be a really dark place if we don't know about the Savior. Turn on the flashlight. Now the room is lit and we can see everything around us. Each of us can be a light to those around us. Talk about what happens when we hide our light or don't share it with others. Point the flashlight to the picture of the Savior and ask the kids how they can use their light to teach others about Jesus.
Activity Ideas:
Play flashlight hide and seek
Primary handout, find all the candles

Jesus wants me to love everyone
Preparation: Paper hearts (one or two for every person)
Scriptures: Matthew 5:44-45
Lesson:
Watch the video, read the scripture references or use a mix of both.
Bible Video
Sermon on the Mount: The Higher Law
Scripture Reference
     Matthew 5:44-45
Talk about how we can show love for everyone. Write their ideas on some hearts and put them up to look at throughout the week to remind them to love everyone.
Activity Ideas:
Play a board game and remember, win or lose, we need to love everyone!
