Simply Family Home Evening: Come, Follow Me lesson Feb 25 - Mar 3

This week's lesson for the New Testament 2019 Come, Follow Me is "He Taught Them as One Having Authority." We will be studying Matthew 6-7 From February 25 - March 3. This week we get to sing one of our kids favorite songs: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man. Plus talk about how we can build our testimony's foundation on the Savior. (BONUS!! If you saw some cute posts floating around with people making prayer rocks back when we studied Luke 1 this is another week where prayer rocks would be a great activity as we read about The Lord's Prayer and discuss the proper order of prayer!) So much in this week's lesson I hope you are all excited about it too. We'd love to hear your ideas on how you will approach this week and how Simply Family Home Evening is most useful in your families!

Our plan this week is to watch the Bible Videos that go with this block of scripture on Sunday the 24th in the afternoon. Often in our family we use the Bible Videos and New Testament stories because they hold the little kids' attention well. Some of our children are very young and don't read yet. We try to make sure the kids understand on their level what happened in the video we watched. In order to make sure we are still teaching from the scriptures as well, we use the excerpts from the scriptures that are suggested in the primary manual.

If this is your first time here, make sure to check out THIS POST which will give you an overview of the layout for our lessons.

The lesson idea we decided to focus on for Family Home Evening this week is:
I can build a strong foundation by following Jesus
Simply Family Home Evening: Come, Follow Me lesson Feb 25 - Mar 3
Preparation: Object lesson: water, some sand, rocks, a pitcher of water, a plastic doll house, farm house, barn or structure of some kind from the kids toys that can get wet and a bowl big enough that the house will fit in it.
Clip art rocks (10), or use our Cricut rocks
One of each of the following images:
Learn the teachings of Jesus
Clip art image of a house, (a picture of your family in front of your own home would be perfect if you have it!)
Opening Song: "The Wise Man and the Foolish Man" Children's Songbook pg 281
Lesson:
Read the scripture reference
Scripture Reference
     Matthew 7:24-27
Get the items listed above for the object lesson. Place the house on the sand and pour water over the sand. Repeat the same with the rocks. Talk about what happened with each of the foundations. Talk about ways we can build a strong foundation. Use the picture of the house or your own house, tape the rocks under the picture. Use the images you printed off and tape them to the rocks showing ways we can build a strong foundation on our Savior.

Activity Ideas:
Play Jenga.
If we have a strong foundation and we don't let the world move us and break away at it then we won't fall over.
Additional Lesson or Discussion Ideas:

I can seek eternal treasures instead of earthly treasures
Preparation: Treasure chest (box) filled with a toy house, money, cars toys (earthly treasures),
Clip art images of gems (10) or use our Cricut gems
the images from the lesson above taped to the gems.
Scriptures: Matthew 6:19-21
Lesson:
Watch the video, read the scripture references or use a mix of both.
Bible Video
Sermon on the Mount: Treasures in Heaven
Scripture Reference
     Matthew 6:19-21
Get out the treasure chest/box with all the earthly treasures. Talk about them. Replace the earthly treasures with the eternal treasures taped to the gems. Talk about the two groups of treasures. Which ones are better? Which ones can we take with us when we die? Which ones has Jesus told us are most important and the ones we should be seeking?

Activity Ideas:
Play "what's missing" with the treasures.
(For those who may not be familiar with this game from Daniel Tiger its a simple memory game. You start out with all the treasures there. The person who is "it" closes their eyes. The rest of those playing select one treasure to take away. The person who is "it" opens their eyes and tries to guess what is missing.)

I can pray to my Heavenly Father as Jesus Did
Preparation: Primary handout
Scriptures: Matthew 6:5-13
Lesson:
Watch the videos, either New Testament Stories or Bible Videos; read the scripture references or use a mix of both.
New Testament Stories
Chapter 20: Jesus Teaches About Prayer
Bible Video
Sermon on the Mount: The Lord's Prayer
Scripture Reference
     Matthew 6:5-13
Use the primary handout, have one pre-made or allow the kids to each make their own and then use the wheels to teach them about the proper order of prayer.
