Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Mar 11-17 "These Twelve Jesus Sent Forth

"Who Hath Ears to Hear, Let Him Hear," that is the title for this week's lesson in Come, Follow Me. We will be studying Matthew 13 and Luke 8 and 13. I can't tell you how much I am loving learning about our Savior and His teachings. Diving into the New Testament week after week with my kids is helping me learn SO MUCH MORE then I ever have! I'm excited about this week because we're talking about taking in and absorbing the lessons we are learning from our Savior! (HAPPY FACE AND CARTWHEELS!) Let's take it all in right?

Two things for this week: First, with St Patrick's Day being on Sunday and one of the lessons this week is about how our membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a treasure - we HAD to find something fun for you guys! We came across this fun scavenger hunt on the Dating Divas website.  (I know it's just a smidge late if you're finding this later in the week but I hope it will still work for your family because it is DARLING!)

Also, if you are living in an area that has started to warm up a bit, one of the lesson ideas is to plant some seeds. (We're still a little chilly here in southern Utah but my kids LOVE plants so I'm going to try and get our pots in a window and maybe transplant them when it warms up later this spring.) These growing plants will be a great object lesson to keep referencing back to all summer long as they grow and bloom about what can happen with our testimonies if we prepare ourselves to receive the teachings of Jesus.

As has become our habit, our plan this week is to watch the Bible Videos that go with this block of scripture on Sunday the 17th in the afternoon. Often in our family we use the Bible Videos and New Testament stories because they hold the little kids' attention well. Some of our children are very young and don't read yet. We try to make sure the kids understand on their level what happened in the video we watched. In order to make sure we are still teaching from the scriptures as well, we use the excerpts from the scriptures that are suggested in the primary manual.

If this is your first time here, make sure to check out THIS POST which will give you an overview of the layout for our lessons.

The lesson idea we decided to focus on for Family Home Evening this week is:
I need to prepare my heart to receive the teaching of Jesus
Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Mar 11-17 "These Twelve Jesus Sent Forth
Preparation: Two small planters. One filled with soil and the other rocks.
A package of seeds (If you plan to let them actually grow through the summer this year you may consider changing the size of your pots or what seeds you plant. If you are simply doing it as an object lesson I would make sure the seeds are large and very easy to see. Squash plants, sunflower seeds, beans or peas are good sized)
Print out the Primary Handout for this week.
Opening Song: "Faith" Children's Songbook pg 57
Read the scripture reference
Scripture Reference
     Matthew 13:1-23
After reading the scriptures get out the two planters.
Have the kids sprinkle the seeds on the rocks and on the soil. You can even have them spill some outside of the planters.
Which of these seeds are going to grow? The ones in the rocks? the soil? the ones that fell outside of the planters entirely?
Water both of the pots and put them in a sunny place. Which seeds are going to grow? Why? What do seeds need in order to grow?
What about our testimonies? Talk about what we need to do to have the word of God planted in our hearts and to allow our testimony to grow. (Alma 32:28 is another scripture you could reference for this.)

Heavenly Father wants me to choose the right

Preparation: Prepare the Choices Game from Pinning With Purpose. Go check out the link so you understand how to set up and play the game. You will need:
-construction paper (I used 41 sheets for my set up)
-a singular dice
-a picture of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane with a label of repentance
-a picture of Heavenly Father or Jesus with a label of exultation
-These printable pages to put on your colored construction paper.
(The first page is meant to be cut in half and placed under the corresponding pictures listed above. Also, these are just the scenarios we came up with. There are others mentioned on the original post. If you want your game to have more choices or if you want to make them fit your family better - do it! You will need one "Go sit on the couch" page for every choice you have to set the game up properly. Feel free to print out what you need and if you do decide to add other questions comment below with other choice options you came up with. They could help inspire others in making their game.)
     Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43, 47-48
Jesus Declares the Parable of the Wheat & Tares, Mustard Seed, and Leaven
Watch the videos; read the scriptures or use a combination of both.
How can we know if we are making the correct choice? Why is important to choose the right?
Activity Ideas:
Play the Choices Game. Visit that link to see how she set up the game and play it with your kids.

I need to prepare to learn the teachings of Jesus

Preparation: None for this lesson
     Matthew 13:1-23
Read Matthew 13:9, 15. As you read have the kids point to the body parts they hear mentioned in the scriptures. Talk about how they can use each body part to learn the teachings of Jesus.

My membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a treasure
Preparation: Print off the pieces you need for this fun scavenger hunt we found on the Dating Divas website. It's a little involved so go check it out to make sure you have all the pieces. It is going to be SO FUN!
     Matthew 13:44-46
     The Kingdom of Heaven
Watch the video; read the scriptures or do a mix of both.
Why is our membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints such a treasure? What can we do to show that our membership in The Church is important to us?
Activity Ideas:
We love finding fun little things to do with our kids around the holidays. With St Patrick's Day soooo close to this week's lesson we found a fun scavenger hunt on the Dating Divas website. They have the cutest challenges and games at each clue. We're so excited about it! Hope you have a great time finding your "treasure" with your family.
