The lesson idea we decided to focus on for Family Home Evening this week is:
Keeping the commandments will help me know they are true.
Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: April 29 - May 5 "I Am The Good Shepherd"
Preparation: Print out the Commandments Matching Game
Opening Song: "Keep the Commandments" Children's Songbook pg 146
Scriptures: John 7:14-17
Lesson:
Read John 7:17
Use the Commandments Matching Game. As the kids pick matches, read the commandment and make sure they understand what it means. Make sure they understand how they will be blessed when they follow the commandments.
Adapt for older kids: Add additional commandments such as tithing and the world of wisdom to the commandments you talk about. Use some examples from the scriptures such as Daniel (Daniel 6) or Nephi (1 Nephi 3-4). Let the kids share an example of when they have kept the commandments and how it made them feel.
Activity Ideas:
Play the commandment match or another matching game as a family.

Additional Lesson or Discussion Ideas:

Jesus obeyed His father

Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: April 29 - May 5 "I Am The Good Shepherd"

Scriptures: John 8:29
Lesson:
Read John 8:29 and have the kids repeat "I do always those things that please Him."
Ask the kids what things Jesus did to please His father. (Use the Gospel Art Book). Ask them what we can do to please our Heavenly father and our earthly parents and families.
Activity Ideas:
Play Dad (Simon) says

Jesus knows me and loves me

Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: April 29 - May 5 "I Am The Good Shepherd"

Scriptures: John 10:1-18
Videos:
Bible Video:
     "The Good Shepherd"
Lesson:
Watch the video.
Give each child one of the pictures you printed. Read the story of the Good Shepherd (John 10:1-18). Have the kids hold up their picture when they hear it in the story.
Hold up a picture of Jesus with the lambs. Tell the kids that we are the sheep in this story and Jesus s the shepherd. He knows and loves each one of us.
Activity Ideas:
Color and cut out the primary handout

The truth can make us free
Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: April 29 - May 5 "I Am The Good Shepherd"

Preparation: Get a lock that can be opened with a key, or have a picture of both. Have a scarf or a tie.
Scriptures: John 8:31-36
Videos:
Bible Video:
"Jesus Declares I Am the Light of the World the Truth Shall Make You Free"
Lesson:
Watch the video
Read John 8:31-36
Throughout their lives your kids will encounter those who think living the gospel is restrictive. From these verses, what do they think it means to be a servant of sin? How do the teachings of Jesus help us be free?
Show a lock to represent sin and a key to represent how truths of the gospel can make us free. For example, knowing about the Savior's Atonement can give us freedom to repent and be forgiven of our sins. {When we sin the lock is closed. We can imagine it is locking a gate and we can't go forward until we unlock it. We can't move forward or return to live with our Heavenly Father. When we use the atonement and repent, like the key it can unlock the gate and let us continue on the path back to our Heavenly Father.} Or knowing about the Word Of Wisdom can give us freedom to avoid addictions.

OR
Ask one of your kids or your their dad to help you lightly wrap a rope, scarf, or necktie around your wrists to demonstrate how we become bound to sin when we commit it over and over again without repenting.
