Come, Follow Me Aug 5-11 "The Power of God unto Salvation"
Hello! I am so happy you have found us or better yet, come back to see us again for another week of Simply Family Home Evening lesson ideas for your New Testament Come, Follow Me study! This week we are starting a new book, Romans! My kids always get so excited when we reach a new book. And I don't know about you and your family but I've noticed that a lot of my "New Testament story knowledge" is from the Gospels. There are a lot of these stories and scriptures that I am not familiar with very well - or even at all! What an awesome blessing to study them with my family!
This week we are reading Romans 1-6 and the lesson title in Come, Follow Me is "The Power of God unto Salvation.

The lesson idea we decided to focus on for Family Home Evening this week is:
Preparation: Print maps of Paul's mission. This map is the Bible Map of Paul's missions. The routes of the missions are easy to see. This map of Paul’s mission has the countries color coded and makes boards easier to see. It is based on the King James Version of the Bible but is not released by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. (This is important to know if you plan to use a map in a Primary lesson, as we understand it, visual aids should be ones that are released by The Church.)
Print out the Pin the tie on the Missionary game.
Get materials for a simple obstacle course. (Or if your house looks like mine, just don't clean up. The maze of legos and toys should work just fine the way it is. 😂)
Blindfold.
Opening Song: “When I am Baptized” Children’s Songbook pg 103
Scriptures: Romans 1:16–17
Lesson:
Set up a simple obstacle course for your kids (Level of difficulty should be based on the ages of your kids.) Blindfold the first child to go through the obstacle course. Their goal is to get through the course and arrive at the picture of Jesus. Depending on their age, either guide them through the course with your voice only, giving directions to them on how to avoid the obstacles, or guide them through it slowly with a light touch.

Lesson:
Show this map of Paul’s missionary journey to help understand where Rome is in comparison to
where the rest of the New Testament stories have taken so place so far.
Paul wrote his epistle to the Romans during his third mission while in Corinth. Read Romans 1:17. Have the kids repeat, “The just shall live by faith” until they can do it without help.

Hang
a picture of Jesus of the wall .

Talk to them about how this represents “The Just Shall Live By Faith”. Even though we can’t see Christ, we
know He is guiding us back to Him. We can find Him guiding us through the scriptures, teachings from modern day prophets and the Holy Ghost.
Adapt for older kids:
Read Romans 1:16 and have them memorize the phrase “For I am not
ashamed of the Gospel of Christ” and talk to them about how this scripture can
help them. For example, in situations with friends that are not members that may
criticize them for their beliefs.

Additional Lesson or Discussion Ideas:
Being baptized is like becoming a new person
Scriptures: Romans 6:1–11
Videos:
Bible Video:
The Baptism of Jesus
New Testament Stories:
Chapter 10: Jesus Is Baptized
Lesson:
Watch the videos; read the scriptures or use a combination of both.
Hold up the picture of someone being baptized.
Read Romans 6:4 .
Have the kids repeat “Walk in the newness of life” until they can do it without help.
Use the handout from the primary manual to help illustrate what this means. When we are baptized we are forgiven of our sins. We have the chance to go forward and make good choices, repenting when we make mistakes, and striving to become more like Jesus.
Adapt for older children: Read Romans 6:3–6.
Discuss the symbolism of baptism being like death and resurrection. Read the
sacrament prayers in Doctrine and Covenants and
tell the kids every time we take the sacrament we renew our covenants with Him
and it is like being baptized all over again.
Activity Ideas:Have another Primary Handout for each child to color and put together.
We all need Jesus Christ in order to be forgiven of our sins
Preparation: Put a treat or a toy in a bag and hang it high where the
kids won’t be able to reach it.
Scriptures: Romans 3:23–24
Lesson:
Hang a treat or toy up high where the kids can’t reach it.
Read Romans 3:23–24.
Make sure
to tell them that “grace” in this scripture means the Savior’s gift of love and
mercy, the atonement, which makes it possible for us to receive forgiveness for our sins.
Have each
kid try to reach the toy or treat by themselves. When they can’t do it, tell
them that each of us will sin, and because of that we wouldn’t be able to live
with Heavenly Father again. Jesus had to come down to earth to perform the
Atonement and help us to return to our Heavenly Father. Lift up one of the children so that they can reach the treat or toy.
