Come, Follow Me Oct 14-20: "I Can Do All Things Through Christ Which Strengtheneth Me"
Hey, welcome back! How was General Conference for you? We LOVED it! Both of us sisters-in-law here at Simply Family Home Evening are out of town for October's Conference every year. It's such a great break to be in the mountains and hear the words of the Lord's Prophet and our other leaders surrounded by gorgeous aspen trees all dressed up in their fall colors! 🥰 I hope you enjoyed your weekend as well!
On to this week's lesson. Our Come, Follow Me study is going to cover two books of scripture this week. Philippians and Colossians. The title for the lesson this week is one of my favorites - "I Can Do All Things Through Christ Which Strengtheneth Me." This might be the thing that finally pushes me over the edge and makes me buy a letter board. {I'm probably the only LDS mom that doesn't have one yet! 😂}
But seriously, I've always loved that scripture and I want it up in my house! Such a great lesson this week. Let's scroll down just a bit. All the Simply Family Home Evening lesson ideas for your family's Come, Follow Me study are coming right up!

The lesson idea we decided to focus on for Family Home Evening this week is:
Preparation: Have a copy of the 13th Article of Faith. Print out some pictures of scriptures, Jesus, a temple, your family, a hymn or primary book, or anything else that can help turn your kid's thoughts to Christ.
Scriptures: Philippians 4:8
Lesson:
Read Philippians 4:8 then read the 13thArticle of Faith. Talk simply about what each of these big words mean.
Based on your kids ages, talk to them about some of the things they might be exposed to at school, with friends, or while they are on the internet.
Discuss different ways we can turn our thoughts to things that are true, honest and pure when Satan is trying to distract us with evil and impure things.
Pull out the pictures you have and use them as part of the discussion on what we can do to redirect our thoughts.
Memorize a favorite scripture, hum or sing a favorite primary song or hymn, think about your family or the temple.
Adapt for older kids: Help them memorize or type up a scripture they can use to help them
get their thoughts back on track. Memorizing some scripture masteries together would be a great thing to do!
Activity Ideas:
Play name that tune with primary songs. If you don't have a piano or the primary songs on CD you can use the Sacred Music app or even play them online. If you turn on your flash player it allows you to select music only, without the lyrics, at the top of the sheet music.

Additional Lesson or Discussion Ideas:
Church leaders love me and pray for me
Preparation: Have a picture of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Use LDS Tools to find pictures of your local leaders.
Scriptures: Philippians 1:3–4; Colossians 1:3, 9
Lesson:
Read Philippians 1:3–4; Colossians 1:3, 9
Talk about who your church leaders are. The primary presidency, young women or men's presidency, the bishop and bishopric, the stake presidency and the first presidency. If you can, have pictures of each of them (look on LDS tools for pictures of your local leaders.)
Talk about how these leaders ask Heavenly Father to help, inspire and bless the children they are responsible for. If you have time to plan ahead and it isn't a burden for your child's specific leader, you could ask them to write a letter to your child telling them how much they love them.
Activity Ideas:
Take a treat to one of your local leaders.
I can rejoice in the Lord
Read Philippians 4:4
My faith should be “rooted” in Jesus Christ
Preparation: Print out the primary handout
Scriptures: Colossians 1:23; 2:6–7
Video:
Spiritual Whirlwinds
Lesson:
Read Colossians 1:23; 2:6–7
Watch Spiritual Whirlwinds
Have a copy of the primary handout. Talk about ways your kids can be “rooted in Christ.”
Adapt for Older Kids:
Discuss the video. On the roots of the primary handout write ways you can continue to be “rooted in Christ.".
Activity Ideas:
Color the primary handout

I can rejoice in the Lord
Preparation: Have pictures or physical objects that help you rejoice in the Lord. (A beautiful creation of God, a temple, the resurrected Savior, your family, chocolate... you know just a collection of things.)
Scriptures: Philippians 4:4, 8
Lesson: Read Philippians 4:4
Have your kids help you finish these sentences:
- I can be in the dark and still see if I have a ______________. (flashlight/lantern)
- I can be outside on a hot day and still feel cool if I have _______________. (a fan/shade)
- I can have hard times and still find joy if I ____________. (pray/serve others)
Pull out the objects or pictures that represent things that help you “rejoice in the
Lord.” Let your kids take turns selecting a
picture or object, and then tell them why it makes you happy. Invite them to
share things that help them rejoice in the Lord.
Talk
to them about ways they can remember that the Savior is always with us during
hard times. They can sing a hymn, read a favorite scripture, serve someone, or
say a prayer of thanks.
Adapt for older kids: Read
Philippians 4:4–13 with your kids and ask them to look for the following words:
rejoice, peace, content. What does Philippians 4:4–13 suggest you do to find
joy in Christ during trials?
Share
with your kids your favorite hymn or scripture when you are struggling with
your trials.
