Come, Follow Me Sep 23-29: “Walk in the Spirit”

Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Sep 23-29 "Walk in the Spirit"

Welcome to Simply Family Home Evening! I am so so glad you are here! We have some great ideas for your Come, Follow Me study this coming week! We are going to study Galations, another of Paul's letters. I love reading through these books of scripture. The teachings are so simple and basic, they were to new members of The Church and it would make perfect sense that they would need help understanding this new religion. I love it because it's perfect for kids lessons but I also feel it helps me to go back and review the "primary answers." There is so much to be learned from the basics!

This week we get to talk about the consequences that come from our decisions, the Holy Ghost and how he can help us feel joy and peace and also revisit service. It's a great week for reinforcement and discussions with our kids too because (well in our family anyway) we are talking about choices DAILY! 😂

Here we go! Let's get started! Just below are all of our lesson ideas for this week's study!

"Walk in the Spirit"

Simply Family Home Evening Lesson Plan
The lesson idea we decided to focus on for Family Home Evening this week is:
The Holy Ghost helps me feel love, joy, and peace

Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Sep 23-29 "Walk in the Spirit"
Preparation: Print and cut out The Fruits of the Spirit printable. Or if you have a Cricut, you can use the Cricut file for this lesson.
Opening Song: “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” Hymn 136
Scriptures:  Galatians 5:22–23
Lesson:
Read the scripture.
Have your kids take turns picking a piece of fruit and talk about what each word means and if they have ever felt that way.
Share some stories of your own of the power of The Spirit and the about the times you have felt it in your life.
Adapt for older kids:
Galatians 5:22–23 is a scripture mastery. Work with your kids to memorize these scriptures. Use the fruits to help you!

Additional Lesson or Discussion Ideas:

Jesus Christ wants me to help those in need

Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Sep 23-29 "Walk in the Spirit"
Preparation: Get an object that is heavy for your children to lift.
Scriptures: Galatians 6:2
Lesson:
Read Mosiah 18:8 and Galatians 6:2
Talk to your kids about how when they are baptized they make covenants with the Lord. One of these covenants or promises is to bear one another’s burdens. Have each of your kids try to lift something heavy, a box of rocks, a heavy book, etc. When they have trouble, ask another one of your kids to help them. How much easier was it to lift the heavy object with help? Would they be able to carry it longer and further with help?
Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Sep 23-29 "Walk in the Spirit"
Talk to them about ways they can help bear another’s burdens. (Sit with a kid who’s alone at lunch at school, visit with those that are sick or injured, etc.) Challenge them this week to find one way they can bear another’s burdens this week and talk about it during FHE next week.
Adapt for older kids:
If they have been baptized, remind them that they have already promised to “bear one another’s burdens”. Ask them how they have done that. If they don't feel like they have, point out some instances that you can think of to help them to start to recognize what they have done to help others and ask them how they can try to do it in the future.
Activity Ideas:
Spend some time with your family playing a favorite game.

Our actions, both good and bad, have consequences

Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Sep 23-29 "Walk in the Spirit"
Preparation: Gather some seeds to show your kids. If you have a garden ready to harvest, go ahead and head there for FHE! If not, have a full grown vegetable or fruit that would come from the seeds you have. If you don't have any seeds and can't find them this late in the year then a picture of the seed and vegetable/fruit/tree would work.
I had my kids actually dig and plant the seeds in the lesson, but you can just pretend if this isn’t an option for you.
Have some tape to put a visible line on the ground or mark one in the dirt. Put a happy face on one side and a frowning face on the other side.
Scriptures: Galatians 6:7–9
Lesson:
If you are outside, give your kids some seeds to plant, if not, you can give them the seeds and have them pretend to plant them on the ground or in a pot. Place the fruit or vegetable next to them on the ground. Tell them to hold onto the seeds, they will plant them while you read Galatians 6:7–9. When they hear the word “soweth” have them plant the seed. When they hear the word “reap”, have them pretend to pick the vegetable.
Talk to your kids about how everything has consequences, both good and bad. Ask them if you plant tomato seeds in the ground, what will grow? Is it possible that pumpkins will grow? Or an apple tree?
Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Sep 23-29 "Walk in the Spirit"
If we do bad things, we cannot receive good consequences. Have each child move over to the line of tape on the ground. Have them each take a turn starting on the tape. Present different situations and have them step to the happy side or the sad side.

  • You lie to your mom about stealing cookies out of the pantry.
  • You invite a kid who is playing alone to play with your on the playground.
  • You share your cookie with your brother when he asks for one, and you have the last one.
  • You look at your neighbor’s test in class and see that she has a different answer to the same question on your test. So you change yours.
  • You go to bed as soon as it is bedtime without fighting with your parents.
  • You help your mom in the kitchen without her asking.
  • You play with your dads’ tools and lose one, when he asks you what happened to it, you say you saw your brother playing with it.
  • You notice your little sister is having trouble with her homework, so you stop what you are doing to help her.

Jesus Christ makes us free

Come, Follow Me; Simply Family Home Evening FHE lessons: Sep 23-29 "Walk in the Spirit"
Preparation: Review the lesson "The truth can make us free" from April 29 - May 5.
Have a lock and key or some rope or a long shoelace.
Scriptures: Galatians 5:1
Video:
Lesson:
Read Galatians 5:1
Using the lesson ideas from the April 29 - May 5 lesson, take out the lock and key. When we sin the lock is locked and we can't unlock it no matter how much we pull and tug, but we need to unlock the lock to return and live with Heavenly Father and the Savior. The atonement is the key. The Savior suffered for our sins to that we could repent and be made clean again and unlock the lock that keeps us from coming home. We are free because of Him! (If you don't have a key and lock you can tie one of the child's wrists together with the rope or shoelace and have them try to get out on their own. When they can't have someone else come in and act as the Savior loosening the rope when they repent so that they can free themselves from sin.
